If Druid Hills gets as good of a defensive effort this week against North Cobb as they did against Cross Keys, they will be okay, according to Red Devil coach Jim Rakestraw.

“We felt good about winning,” said Rakestraw after his team’s 22-0 victory. “We probably made more mistakes than we wanted to, but the defense we worked on during our off week really started playing better.”

The Druid Hills defense held Cross Keys to 49 yards rushing and 35 yards passing.

Cross Keys completed only five of 17 passes and rushed for fewer than two yards per carry.

And all of that was with less than a full strength defense. Mike Cutting did not get to play.

Tom Stubbs, who just returned from a bout with mononucleosis, came back and did an excellent job, according to Rakestraw, including recovering a fumble.

However, Stubbs hurt his knee in the game and may spend some more time on the bench.

Offensively, the Red Devils compiled a total of 327 yards, 286 rushing and 41 passing.

David Adams was the leading rusher with 153 yards in 12 carries and one touchdown run of 28 yards.

Tommy Southard ran for 96 yards in 12 carries and one TD of seven yards.

Richard McDermott intercepted a pass, defensively.

Rakestraw praised his offensive line and cited Ken Sherrill and Tripp Childs for their play.

Sherrill caught two passes for 19 yards, one of which set up Druid Hills’ last score.

Southard caught one pass for seven yards, Adams caught one for 28 yards and David Middour caught one for five yards and Mike Goodwin kicked a 34-yard field goal.

“Our boys felt like Cross Keys hit real hard. They were one of the hardest hitting teams we’ve played all year,” said Rakestraw.

And the Devils will meet another hard hitting team in North Cobb this weekend.

“They’re better than their record shows,” said Rakestraw of North Cobb, who has a 1-3 season record so far. “They were one of the top two or three teams we played last year as far as hitting or contact is concerned,” said Rakestraw.
