Senior quarterback David Middour, often called the key to the Druid Hills football team’s offense by Coach Jim Rakestraw during the season, was named the most valuable player of the Red Devils at a banquet last Monday at the school.

Middour guided the Red Devils to a 9-1 season, the best in some 17 years. He completed 60 of 107 passes for 998 yards. He added 162 yards carrying the ball to put him over the coveted 1,000-yard mark.

Tommy Southard, who rushed for 1,062 yards and scored 13 touchdowns, was named best offensive back.

Recipients of other varsity honors were Randy Tanner, best offensive lineman; Glen Bourgeois, best defensive back; Mike Cutting, best defensive lineman; and Dennis Yarborough and Tripp Childs were co-winners of coaches awards as outstanding juniors.

Numerous special recognition plaques were also presented to key members of the team.

B-team laurels were presented to John Kelley, most valuable player; Matt Sweat, best on offense; and Jimmy Langley, best on defense.

Larry Lucas was named the MVP of the 8th grade, as picked by his teammates. Charles Stewart and Cliff Correll, respectively, were named best on defense and best on offense of the 8th grade.

New School For Childs?

Tripp Childs, the leading receiver on this year’s 9-1 Druid Hills football team, reportedly transferred to Lakeside High School this past week.

Childs, a junior, transferred to Lakeside as rumors spread that Jim Rakestraw, the Red Devils’ head football coach, would not return next year.

With the graduation of Matt McCalley, Lakeside’s leading receiver and a senior this year, Childs could apparently help the Vikings’ passing attack.
