Football games are often a feast or famine happening all too often for coaches. Jim Rakestraw of Druid Hills was bemoaning that fact after his Red Devils had clobbered Ridgeview, 48 to 0.

“I just wish we had some of that for Southwest DeKalb,” said the personable head coach, whose team’s only loss was at the hands of the Panthers, a night Druid Hills’ defense consisted of just a field goal.

The Red Devils’ latest win may be a single game record for points scored, but Rakestraw is not certain.

“I think it probably is,” said Rakestraw, “but I don’t know for certain. Records have not been very well kept in the past. But if it’s not one, it is pretty close.”

Druid Hills put together while compiling a 7 to 1 overall record and state ranking in the Journal.

While the offense totaled 388 yards, 130 rushing and 258 passing, the defense only allowed 130 for the game.

Quarterback David Middour fired touchdown passes of 54 yards to Keith Honeycutt and 13 yards to David Adams, while hitting nine of 13 passes for 136 yards.

Junior split end Tripp Childs had three receptions for 111 yards and two touchdowns, including a 23 yarder from Honeycutt and a 60 yarder from Tommy Southard.

Southard had eight rushes for 82 yards, one of those a 30 yard touchdown run. He also completed two passes for 75 yards and a touchdown to give him a total offense of 157 yards.

The Red Devils defense brought praise from the helmsman, who noted that the shutout was his team’s fourth of the year.

Junior linebacker Dennis Yarbrough has established himself as an all state candidate.

Yarbrough had 10 first hits, seven assists, caused two fumbles, sacked the quarterback three times and knocked down two passes.

Mike Cutting blocked a punt that Cutting picked up and ran in, intercepted a pass, recovered a fumble, made four initial hits and five assists.
