If you listen to Dewey Alverson, head Southwest DeKalb football coach, you might start believing that Druid Hills is the best football team this side of the Great Barrier Reef.
“They’re got a real good team, an excellent team,” Alverson said of the Red Devils who Southwest DeKalb will meet Saturday night at Adams Stadium. “They’ll be a hard team to beat.”
Druid Hills is undefeated so far this year, but then so is Southwest DeKalb.
“They have the potential of doing so many things,” said the Panther head coach. “They’ve got it all. They can do everything it takes to move the football.”
Alverson may sound like he is member of the Druid Hills Booster Club, but last week he talked about how big and undefeated Riverwood was. That was before the Panthers beat them, 40 to 0.
“They were big and they were undefeated,” explained Alverson. “We had no idea we could beat them 40 to 0. We got on ’em pretty good. Our kids played real well.”
Southwest DeKalb amassed a total of 442 yards offensively, 259 of those yards coming on the ground.
Marty Snider, the Panther quarterback, hit on eight of 10 passes for 183 yards.
Gregory Graves, SWD’s outstanding running back, picked up 152 yards on the ground on 17 carries.
“They held him to under 200 yards,” said Alverson.
“We feel like it was just a fine football game all the way around,” stated the coach. “Graves scored four times. Snider threw for one. We feel like they all played real well.”
But Druid Hills is the team to stop that.
“They just must be contained,” Alverson said. “They beat everybody with their speed. It will certainly be extremely difficult to stop that.”
Offensive Line Coming Through For Devils
“We played a good football game,” said Avondale’s coach, Crawford Kennedy. “I feel like we gave a good effort and we played a big part in that win.”
“This is the second week in a row that they’ve done a good job for us,” stated Kennedy.
The offensive line came through for Druid Hills, helping the Devils move the ball effectively and score two touchdowns, one of six yards and the second one of 32 yards.
“Of course, they couldn’t do that without some good effort out of those people up front,” Kennedy said.
“We did as well as we like. We did keep them out of the end zone, but they did move the ball on us,” said Kennedy. “We did the job when we had to, but I’d like for us to make first downs on you.”
