Coach Crawford Kennedy, head football coach at Druid Hills, has resigned after six years of leading the Red Devils. Coach Kennedy, who is also the coach of the tennis team, teaches geometry and advanced algebra & trigonometry. Coach James Rakestraw will take over the job which Kennedy will leave vacant.

Mr. Kennedy came to Druid Hills in the spring quarter of 1963 to take over the position of head coach after having coached at Avondale High for two years. Before going to Avondale, he was an assistant coach at Brown High School. In his senior year at Brown High in 1954, Coach Kennedy was an all-state center for the football team. He received his college degree from the University of Georgia.

In 1965 Coach Kennedy directed the Druid Hills football team to one of its greatest seasons in recent history. The record for that year was 8-1-1 and Druid Hills narrowly missed winning the region championship. That year Coach Kennedy was presented the Atlanta Constitution’s award as Coach of the Year in the Greater Atlanta area. Coach Kennedy’s commendable record after his six years at Druid Hills is 28-27-5.

As of yet, Coach Kennedy’s plans are indefinite, but he says that he will remain in the field of coaching. With reference to his leaving, he commented, “I’ve certainly enjoyed working with the fine football players, coaches, and teachers.”

The man who will take over the position of head coach, Mr. Rakestraw, came to Druid Hills in the fall of 1966 and has served three seasons as an assistant football coach. During this time he has also been the B-team basketball coach, with his squads compiling records of 5-5, 7-3, and 10-2 for an impressive overall record of 22-10. He has never had a losing season.

Commenting upon his successor, Coach Kennedy said, “I think Druid Hills is very fortunate to get a coach like Coach Rakestraw. I’m sure he’ll do a tremendous job.”
