Coach Jim Rakestraw in his first season as grid mentor for the Druid Hills Red Devils says that despite an apparent weakness at the quarterback spot, he has two inexperienced boys at that position. His squad should improve from last year’s 5-5 mark.

Rakestraw’s reason for such thinking is traced to running back Murray Brooks (6-3, 210). Big Murray, who maneuvers the 40 in 4.8 seconds, is a blue-chipper if there is one in the area. Only seeing is believing with this kid. He’s quick, tough and blessed with good hands. A two-way performer, Brooks is also a “boss” at linebacker.

The Red Devil coach would even be a bit more elated overall if junior slot back Joe Stubbs were able to play. He’s out indefinitely with a knee injury and his position has not been claimed.

Another team bright point is tackle. There Mike Moon (6-2, 250) and Dean Griffin (5-11, 225) standout. Moon is the fastest interior lineman. Griffin handles kickoffs and punts.

The center slot belongs to senior Tim Butzon (6-1, 205) moved from tackle where he played in ’68. He’s being counted on to do a fine job.

The guards are Lenny Grabia (5-7, 160) and Earl Creech (5-8, 158). Creech, a junior, is reportedly very quick.

Former Hamilton High athlete Robert Copeland (6-2, 185) and Gary Settle (5-10, 165) are ends, while fullback Sanford Freeman (6-2, 190), regarded as an excellent blocker and either quarterbacks Steve Middour (5-8, 160) or Chuck Nichols (5-9, 150).

Middour should see somewhat more duty since he’s a senior and more experienced than 10th grader Nichols. However, Nichols can chunk the ball pretty well.

Druid Hills will open defensively against Therrell on Friday, September 12.
