Three juniors figured in all of Druid Hills’ scoring as the Red Devils trimmed Southwest DeKalb, 12-7, at Adams Stadium Saturday night.
Quarterback Chuck Nichols led the drive with his 23-yard pass to tight end Curtis Tanner to account for six points in the second quarter, and EO Whealler booted field goals of 32 and 38 yards in the second and fourth frame to account for the Red Devils’ dozen points.
Whealler, playing at safety, also starred on defense by intercepting two passes, stopping drives by the Panthers in Druid Hills’ territory.
Southwest DeKalb broke into the scoring column late in the game when Scott Manley plunged over from the two. Charley Kelly converted.
Passes generated most of the yardage as coach Jim Rakestraw’s Red Devils drove for their first touchdown. Joe Stubbs was on the receiving end of a 26 and 15-yard tosses from Nichols, and Tanner pulled in a 42-yarder before terminating the drive with his 23-yard reception for the score.
Cary Thompson carried most of the offensive load for coach Dewey Alverson’s losers, getting some assistance from ninth-grader Marty Snide late in the game.
Besides Whealer, Harold Reese, a 180-lb. guard, and linebacker Sanford Freeman stood out on defense for Druid Hills.
