Druid Hills took a chance on the new two-point conversion option Friday night, and it paid off for St. Pius. The Golden Lions sweated out a 14-13 victory over the Druids.
Druid Hills trailed 14-7 in the fourth quarter, and with 58 seconds left in the game Murray Brooks made it 14-13 on a one-yard scoring smash. Then quarterback Chuck Nichols tried a pass for the two points that would have meant victory. The pass was incomplete.
Nichols, a sophomore, had been a big factor for Druid Hills, completing 11 of 19 passes, including a 12-yard scoring shot to Brooks in the third quarter.
St. Pius controlled the first half of play and took a 14-0 halftime lead on TDs by George Asp and Mike McDermott and Bill Homrick’s extra point.
The second half belonged to Druid Hills, and the defense put a stop to the St. Pius attack in the final two periods. In the second half St. Pius managed only one first down and one yard of total offense.
It was defense that set up the score that almost pulled the game out for Druid Hills. Stuart Thorpe intercepted a pass at the St. Pius 33, and that started the drive that sent Brooks in for the last score of the game.
