Jim Rakestraw, head football coach at Druid Hills High School has his work cut out for him this fall.
For one thing, his team was 1-8-1 last season and this year’s Druid Hills team will be only slightly more experienced than last year’s. There are 10 starters returning, five on offense and five on defense.
To further complicate matters, David Middour, a 5-foot, 11-inch, 170-pound junior who is the projected starting quarterback has no varsity game experience. He sat out the entire season last year with a broken leg.
However, things are not totally dark for Coach Rakestraw’s team. Middour has been throwing the ball exceptionally well this spring and is proving himself a capable field general. Coach Rakestraw is sure he is going to provide needed improvement at quarterback.
“We’ve got a pretty good offensive line. There are still a few places where we lack experience, but we hope we can iron things out as the season progresses,” said Rakestraw.
“Howard Friedberg and Walter Yancey, both seniors, give us pretty good size and quickness in our front line. Also Marty Speigelman is doing a fine job so far this spring and was voted Most Improved Lineman in spring drills.”
Druid Hills also has good size in the defensive front line with 6-foot, 2-inch, 190-pound senior tackle Ken Kilow and 6-foot, 1-inch, 210-pound senior defensive guard Dave Buser.
But the defensive backfield, the linebackers and the defensive secondary are small and inexperienced.
