Druid Hills has not been noted for its football prowess for the last few seasons, but Harold Reese, a 180-pound guard, brought the Red Devils back into the football limelight Saturday night, making 11 individual tackles and playing heads-up defense for the entire game as the Druids took a 12-7 season opening win over Southwest DeKalb at Adams Stadium.

For his outstanding defensive performance, Reese is the Journal’s Defensive Player of the Week.

Kendrick of Columbia Journal Byrd scored 27 touchdowns and a total of 168 points during the 1969 season, and seems to be determined to prove a point in 1970. The Columbus junior picked up where he left off last year, as he registered three touchdowns and two conversion runs for 22 points to pace Kendrick to an upset 35-19 win over Phenix City of Alabama. Byrd takes home the Journal’s Offensive Player of the Week honors for his Friday night performance.

Team of the Week honors go to the Bass High Warriors on account of their opening night win over East Atlanta, 53-0. Bass has only 23 wins in the past 11 years, but kicked off the 1970 season with an impressive win, regardless of the opposition.

And Coach of the Week? Bill McNair of Jonesboro. He inherited an 0-10 team, not at all uncommon at Jonesboro, and would not have believed anyone had they predicted a 24-8 opening win over the Cardinals last spring. It was the first opening night win for the Cardinals in the past eight years.
