Jimmy Rakestraw, the older “little brother” of Chicago Bears’ quarterback Larry Rakestraw, Monday was named new head football coach at Druid Hills High School by Jim Cherry, supt. of DeKalb County schools.

Appointment of Rakestraw to succeed Crawford Kennedy, who resigned after five years at the helm of the Red Devils, was predicted in Monday’s Constitution.

Jimmy Rakestraw was considered one of the finest all-around athletes football, basketball ever developed in Atlanta schools. But publicity wise he was overshadowed by brother Larry, who was a University of Georgia standout after a star-spangled career at West Fulton High. Larry weighed about 200, Jimmy 160, Nuff said.

Jimmy, who spent a year as an assistant coach at Roosevelt High, two years in the Army and one year in business before going to Druid Hills as Kennedy’s coaching aide in 1966, enjoyed a spectacular undergraduate all-sports career himself.

At West Fulton prior to graduation he was an all-state football guard, a top play-making guard in basketball and one of the City League’s finest shortstops. He played in the 1958 All-Star football and baseball games.

Jimmy, a 1962 graduate of Presbyterian College, had a spectacular basketball career with the Blue Stockings of the Little Four Conference. He played varsity ball for four years, was named all-conference two years and all-South Carolina his senior year. In addition, he was named to all-tournament teams on four occasions.
