Druid Hills’ Joe Stubbs and Marist’s Fred Costible are the News’ selections as the Scholar-Athlete back and lineman of the week.

Stubbs, a straight A student, according to coach Jim Rakestraw and president of his student body, enjoyed his best night rushing of the year in a 23-0 win over Habersham.

Costible, a two-way performer, received the highest grade of any offensive lineman in the Eagles’ 18-8 win over Wheeler. He’s a B-plus student, according to coach Dean Hargis.

Stubbs (5-10, 180) rushed for 196 yards on 20 carries and scored once from the one. The 4.9 40-man, regarded by Rakestraw as a “real tough runner,” has now banged out close to 700 yards, according to his coach.

Rakestraw says the highest compliment he could pay his senior halfback is that he is a very unselfish ball player.

“He likes to make a good block as well as get a run,” said his coach.

Costible (5-10, 185) graded out 85 percent at his right offensive tackle spot and was in on 13 tackles at his outside linebacker post. Coach Hargis said a good portion of the offensive plays came his way. The senior two-year letterman combines quickness, hard work and desire to rate a “he’s fine job for us” salute from his coach.
